Adrian Martinez Classic 2015

Adrian Martinez Memorial Scholarship Fund awardees (left to right) Tim O’Brien, Jeremy Chiang, Thiara Grandison and Cady Sanderson celebrate Adrian’s legacy at the Martinez Classic track event at Emerson Field.

As world class runners warmed up for the Adrian Martinez Classic at Emerson Field last week, out on the track four Concord-Carlisle High School graduating seniors had their moment in the sun.

Jeremy Chiang, Thiara Grandison, Timothy O’Brien, and Cady Sanderson are this year’s recipients of generous scholarships from the Adrian Martinez Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Established by the Martinez family, this scholarship fund honors their son Adrian, Concord-Carlisle High School class of 2002. Adrian was a scholar-athlete, track team captain and champion miler. The summer after graduating from Williams College, he was playing in a pickup soccer game when he died suddenly of cardiac heart arrest.

The Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund administers the Martinez award process which is based on financial need. Since 2007, 25 high school seniors have received Martinez scholarships as they head off to college.

O’Brien will attend St. Lawrence University in the fall, while Chiang enters the Isenberg School of Management at U. Mass – Amherst to study business. Grandison is enrolled at the Mass. College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner, and Sanderson will be a freshman at Boston College.

The Adrian Martinez Classic, now a nationally recognized track event attracting elite runners, was also established by the Martinez family. It raises funds for the Friends of CCHS Track and Field and for the Adrian Martinez Memorial Scholarship Fund.
